On June 11, shortly after the launch of Haseen Dillruba's trailer, Gulati had tweeted, "If you want top billing as a Screenwriter in a trailer(something that should be the norm)You need to marry into the production house. Once the Writer becomes a family member, is treated like an Actor-Star."

While he had not taken Dhillon's name directly the comment seemed to be directed at her as Dhillon's name featured prominently in the upcoming film's trailer credits. The reference is said to made with respect to Dhillon's recent wedding to writer Himanshu Sharma who is closely associated with Anand L Rai's production house Colour Yellow Productions, that has produced Haseen Dillruba. This film, starring Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane will be having an OTT release on July 2. Read more about Haseen Dillruba here.

His remarks clearly didn't go well with Dhillon who wrote that the comments were extremely "sexist" and "misogynistic" and that she is "shocked" to know about his views on screenwriters. She said that Gulati's bordering "idiotic" comment is not acceptable. "Neither will I list down my body of work cos ur pea sized brain will not be able to process a successful woman making it on her own! U may hav a brain freeze! Have a good day (sic)," Dhillon further added.

The screenwriter who is known for penning films like Judgementall Hai Kya, Kedarnath and Manmarziyaan found support in Pannu. "A progressive call to credit a writer turned into a sexist rant by the age old misogyny of crediting a woman’s success to the house she marries in or the man she married. Your righteous call for equal credit can’t be overtaken by the bitterness in u," tweeted the lead actor of Haseen Dillruba.

Following the criticism, Gulati has issues a clarification, saying that his tweet was in fact to criticise the credit system by Netflix and was meant "as a quip". He further added, "I did not tag anyone. Nor did i want this to divert the attention from the main issue of Netflix not crediting cast and crew in the trailer. Especially Writers."

Alleging that his tweet had been misinterpreted to be about sexism and misogyny, Gulati wrote further, "I myself liked the trailer of Haseena Dilruba. And in the past i've praised Manmarziya Written by same Writer.
