Halloween is the perfect occasion for many things- carving pumpkins, dressing up as spooky ghosts/vampires/scary characters/whatever you want, and revelling in the spooky season. It's also the perfect occasion to watch these 5 movies, which bring out the Halloween spirit best.

Here are five movies you should watch this Halloween.

1. Heathers (1988)

Directed by Michael Lehmann (in his debut as director) and starring Winona Ryder, 1988's Heathers is more than just a good Halloween movie- it's an iconic cult classic, inspiring a musical, a television reboot, and dozens of Heathers-inspired movies, making it the perfect starting point for your  Halloween binge!

1993's Hocus Pocus is the right mix of witchcraft, whimsy, and fun! Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as a trio of witches, Hocus Pocus is a fun, memorable,  Halloween watch that you just can't forget. We won't spoil it for you- go watch it yourself! 

3. Beetlejuice (1998)

What is it with Winona Ryder starring in iconic Halloween movies? Starring Michael Keaton as the titular character, alongside Winona Ryder, in what were iconic roles for the pair, 1998's Beetlejuice is an American fantasy horror comedy film that will make you laugh, cry, and feel a lot of emotions this Halloween. 

4. Jennifer's Body (2009)

Starring Megan Fox in what could be her most iconic role, 2009's Jennifer's Body, directed by Karyna Kusama, is a film filled with bloodlust, gore, and a lot of hate for terrible men- which is why it's perfect to watch with the girlies! The movie's dark, yet satirical nature makes it a fun and gory watch this Halloween.

5. Midsommar (2019)

If you've been keeping track, you would have noticed that our Halloween watchlist started off with somewhat family-friendly movies, before descending into violence and gore. Well, we've reached stage 5 of the 'absolute terror' scale with Midsommar. This is the movie for the ultimate horror fans, the people who celebrate Halloween hard. It's not an outwardly terrifying movie (it's not a slasher film) but it is one that will keep you up at night- be warned!
