British actor and UN women's ambassador Emma Watson has been banned from driving in the United Kingdom for six months after accumulating a total of 12 penalty points on her driving license due to repeated speeding offences. The 35-year-old Harry Potter star did not appear in person at the High Wycombe Magistrates’ Court, where the verdict was delivered on July 16.
According to court documents, Watson was caught overspeeding at 38 mph in a 30 mph zone in Oxfordshire on July 31, 2024. This most recent offence pushed her total number of points over the legal limit. Under UK driving law, accumulating 12 or more penalty points within three years typically results in an automatic six-month driving ban.
Public Image At Odds
This marks Watson’s fourth driving violation in two years. She had previously been fined and penalised for three separate speeding offences in October 2023, November 2023, and January 2024. Her legal representative told the court that Watson had not responded to the latest notice in time due to “an administrative oversight.”
The court imposed a £1,044 fine, which includes a £660 speeding penalty, £264 in court costs, and a £120 victim surcharge. Her lawyer noted that she is “in a financial position to pay the fine immediately.”
On the same day, fellow Harry Potter actress Zoë Wanamaker, known for her role as Madam Hooch, was also handed a six-month driving ban after being clocked at 46 mph in a 40 mph zone. The court treated both cases independently, but the coincidence drew significant media attention.
Watson, who is currently pursuing postgraduate studies in creative writing at Oxford and co-runs a sustainable gin brand, has largely stepped back from acting. She remains known for her global humanitarian work and polished public image, making the driving ban particularly newsworthy.
Legal experts have pointed out that the UK’s “totting-up” system makes no exceptions for public figures. Any further infractions could lead to harsher penalties or even criminal charges.
