Renowned tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away on Sunday, December 15 at the age of 73 in San Francisco, where he was undergoing treatment for health-related issues. His family confirmed that he succumbed to complications arising from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The music legend had been hospitalised for two weeks and was later moved to the ICU as his condition worsened.

AR Rahman expressed his grief over the passing of Zakir Hussain through emotional posts on social media. Sharing a series of pictures with the legend on Instagram, Rahman accompanied the photos with flower and prayer emojis as a mark of respect and sorrow.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) earlier that day, Rahman reflected on the impact Zakir Hussain had on the world of music. He described the loss as irreplaceable, stating, "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un. Zakir Bhai was an inspiration, a towering personality who elevated the tabla to global acclaim. His loss is immeasurable for all of us."
Revealing their unfulfilled plans of working together, Rahman added, “I regret not being able to collaborate with him as much as we did decades ago, though we had planned an album together. You shall be truly missed. May his family and his countless students worldwide find the strength to bear this immense loss, #ZakirHussain.”

Tributes Pour In From Celebs
Kareena Kapoor shared an old photo on her Instagram Stories, featuring herself, Zakir Hussain, and her father, Randhir Kapoor. In the picture, Zakir and Randhir shook hands as Kareena looked on. She wrote, "Maestro forever," along with red heart emojis.
