There have been ample Hindi films where we saw a single woman, her struggles and a happy ending which was mostly a wedding or a true love. However, why is it necessary for an ending to have a happy wedding? An alternate happy ending for a female lead could be landing her dream job or living her dream life. Marriage is not always the end that most women expect. Dumped by her fiance a day before their wedding, 24 years old Rani decides to leave for her honeymoon alone. Hence, begins her trip to Amsterdam and Paris where she explores new places, makes new friends and gets to know a different side of herself. She learns that there is much more to life other than the trivial things she was worried about all along and decides to live on her own terms from now on giving her story a happy ending.

Sandhya, a young widow is not at all mourning her husband's death as she claims that they were not close enough as it had only been five months. Her family and in-laws think that she might be in a trauma and try to console her but soon realise she is telling the truth. They decide to marry her off again but she wants to start a new life for herself, one that she was never allowed to have. Hence, after a lot of rebellion, she finally gets to move to a new city and pursue her dream job. Her happy ending was starting a independent life.

Richa Chadha's Devi Pathak had dreamt of only one happy ending, a life away from oppression, fear and humiliation. After being recorded in an inappropriate state followed by the death of her boyfriend, Devi is harassed by Inspector Mishra who threatens to frame her for her boyfriend's suicide. He demands a large sum of money which leads Devi and her father to miseries and hardships. When she finally gets lucky enough to pay off the Inspector's debt, she decides to fulfil her dream of studying at the Allahabad University.

Heartbroken and stressed Kaira has seen her fair share of troubles and dilemmas including a breakup and getting ousted from her apartment. A forced stay at her parents house in Goa leads to her encounter with psychologist Dr. Jehangir Khan whom she approached regarding her insomnia. Jehangir helps her overcome her anxiety and fears and explore the joys of life for her own sake. In the end, we see Kaira getting a happy ending in the form of reconciliation with her parents and completing her short film.

Ekk Main Aur Ekk Tu

Riana was unemployed and troubled until she met Rahul who seemed to create a new trouble for her as they get married while they are drunk. Soon, they become close due to a turn of events that leads to them living together. They get to know each other and become friends but Rahul seems to develop feeling for Riana. She could not reciprocate them but they stick together as Riana doesn't want their friendship to ruin. At the end, we see Rahul coming to terms with the fact that Riana doesn't like him and they annul their marriage and part ways to live their own lives, a happy ending indeed.

Veera's comfortable life in her parent's house was more toxic than it seems. So when she gets kidnapped by Mahabir, she finds it a way to escape her harsh reality and wander around carefree. Veera soon starts to care for Mahabir but just as she thought things were going smoothly, police arrives and Mahabir is shot dead. Veera is back to her toxic life but she decides to not stay silent anymore. She bursts out at her family confessing the trauma she had suffered all along. Finally she gets her happy ending as she moves to a house in the mountains to live a peaceful life that she always dreamt of.
