Bengali Actor Soumitra Chatterjee's Wife Deepa Chatterjee Passes Away

Late Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee’s wife, Deepa Chatterjee, passed away on Sunday morning at a hospital in Kolkata. The 83-year-old was admitted to a hospital in Beleghata where she died due to kidney failure.

Paulomi Bose, the daughter of Soumitra Chatterjee, confirmed the news to PTI. “Maa breathed her last around 2:55 am. She died of kidney failure,” she informed.

The award-winning actor also told Calcutta Times, "After Bapi (father, Soumitra) left us in November, maa lost the will to live. She kept on telling us, ‘Please let me go now”.

Deepa Chatterjee was also an actress, who has shared the screen with iconic Bengali stars Uttam Kumar and Supriya Choudhury in the films Bilombita Lay, and Durga.

The actors Soumitra Chatterjee and Deepa, who were married for 60 years, tied the knot in 1960.

On November 15, the legendary actor, Soumitra Chatterjee died at the age of 85 in Kolkata as well, weeks after he tested negative for COVID-19. Reportedly, he contracted the coronavirus following a film shoot of his biopic titled Abhijaan, and had unfortunately developed health complications.

The Bengali actor’s funeral was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee along with several cinema personalities from the film industry.

Deepa Chatterjee, who was an actor as well as an ace badminton player, acted in a few films. The actor shared the screen with iconic Bengali stars Uttam Kumar and Supriya Choudhury in Bilambita Lay, which released in 1970. She also starred in films such as the 2001 release Durga. Besides these cinematic projects, Deepa Chatterjee also featured in Catherine Berge directorial documentary on Soumitra Chatterjee's career titled Gaach in 1998.
