Elvish Yadav, Chum Darang (IG)
YouTuber and Bigg Boss OTT winner Elvish Yadav appeared before the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday, April 22 after being summoned over allegedly racist remarks aimed at actor and Bigg Boss 18 contestant Chum Darang. The summons, as per a News18 report, required him to appear on February 17, but his visit and apology took place Tuesday.
Elvish Yadav Appears Before NCW, Apologises to Chum Darang
The controversy erupted after Elvish made a comment involving Chum Darang’s name, which many social media users and activists called out as racist and insensitive. The incident led to strong public backlash and caught the attention of the NCW.
Addressing the media after his appearance at the NCW office, Elvish clarified his stance and offered an apology for the hurt caused. Speaking to ANI, he said, "As we grow in life and our age increases, maturity comes, and those who were bothered by the 'Chum' part—there are many people who did not understand my intentions."
Acknowledging the impact of his words, Elvish added, "I agree that if people are bothered by my statements, I must have said something wrong. In regard to this case, I went inside and apologised. I have nothing personal against anyone, nor do I hold grudges. I have submitted my apology to all the people I have hurt, especially Chum. I don't even know her personally. But my apologies to everyone who has been hurt by my remarks."
NCW Issues Summons To Elvish Yadav For His 'Racist' Remarks Against Chum Darang
Earlier, the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women (APSCW) had strongly criticised Yadav for his derogatory remarks targeting Darang. The commission had urged the National Commission for Women (NCW) to take suo motu cognizance of Yadav's “racist and offensive” comments. In an official letter addressed to the NCW, APSCW chairperson Kenjum Pakam condemned Yadav’s remarks, stating they not only insulted Chum Darang but also disrespected women across Northeast India.
Pakam noted, “The comment tarnishes the reputation of Chum in particular and Northeast women in general. Such behaviour creates a pervasive sense of fear and intimidation among women from the region who aspire to build their careers in Bollywood, making them vulnerable and marginalized.”
The letter further urged the NCW to take swift action against Yadav, underlining the necessity of addressing racial discrimination faced by Northeastern women in mainstream industries.
Chum Darang's Respond to Racist Remarks
Following the controversy, Chum Darang took to Instagram Stories to share her thoughts and call out the inappropriate behaviour. Beginning her note, she wrote, “Disrespecting someone's identity and name is not 'fun.' Mocking someone's achievements is not 'banter.'. It's time we draw the line between humour and hate.”
Chum also addressed the specific jabs at her role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's critically acclaimed film Gangubai Kathiawadi. She stated, “What's even more disappointing is that this wasn't just about my ethnicity, my hard work and a film backed by a visionary like Sanjay Leela Bhansali were also disrespected."
“To my fellow Northeasterners and everyone who has faced racism, I see you, I hear you, and I stand with you. We all deserve respect, dignity, and equality. Let's raise our voices against racism and promote a culture of empathy, kindness, and understanding,” she concluded.
Yadav, in a recent podcast with another social media influencer, Rajat Dalal, had mocked Darang’s name and belittled those who admired her work. The clip from the podcast went viral on social media before being taken down, leading to widespread backlash.
