Delhi: Teen Dalit Girl Allegedly Kidnapped, Raped For Resisting Forced Prostitution

A 14-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly kidnapped from Mathura and attempts were made to sell her for prostitution in Delhi recently, according to reports. When she resisted the forced prostitution, she was allegedly raped multiple times by a man. An FIR in the case was registered last week and an investigation is currently on.

The girl's mother, who approached the police, said she was rescued from a petrol pump in the national capital some days ago, according to The Times of India. She claims the teen alleged the man in question had planned to sell her to a brothel for lakhs of rupees.

Police at Kosi Kalan in Mathura have reportedly booked four persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including criminal conspiracy, in relation to the teen's case.

Her mother has alleged some local neighbours in Mathura, including a woman, are responsible for the kidnapping.

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows that ten cases of rapes against Dalit women emerged everyday in 2019. Atrocities against Dalits and tribal communities further increased during the pandemic in the past year, NCRB numbers reveal. This presents an alarming reality with regard to gender-based violence against marginalised groups in India, despite laws claiming to assure safety.

In October this year, a disturbing case of Dalit rape came to light from a village in Gurugram where a five-year-old girl was allegedly raped and murdered. The accused, her neighbour, confessed to the crime and said he did it under the influence of alcohol, as per reports. Read here.

The gangrape and death of a Dalit minor, a nine-year-old girl, in the Delhi Cantonment area this year in August was another case that shook the nation. The four accused persons, which included a priest, had reportedly cremated her too without her family's consent after committing the crime. According to the chargesheet filed by the Delhi police in the case, two accused men allegedly confessed that they raped the girl "because she was a Dalit." Read here.
