Can we just let Deepika Padukone be?

At the onset, let me acknowledge that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But maybe within a reason? So, Deepika Padukone went to The Ellen DeGeneres show and spoke about having babies with Vin Diesel. Her followers rejoiced on Twitter for making Indians proud on a global platform. Then Scroll writes an article, critiquing her appearance saying, "she could barely match Priyanka Chopra’s poise and confidence".

The social media bandwagon joins in, some calling Deepika boring and coy, others dismiss Priyanka for faking it.

The social media bandwagon joins in, some calling Deepika boring and coy, others dismiss Priyanka for faking it. The news website takes one more step to pit the ladies against one another, "Chopra put on her Stateside accent for DeGeneres but behaved as though she had been matching wits with talk show hosts her entire life. Padukone appeared a bit nervous and air-headed, while Chopra gave off a superbly rehearsed and sophisticated vibe. Note to Padukone’s handlers: when in Hollywood, don’t do as in Bollywood."

Air-headed? Really? Deepika Padukone was the only new entrant in Forbes 2016 list of the World's Highest Paid actress. She has done 31 films and utilised her stature as a public figure to speak openly about depression and do something about it.

Air-headed? Really? Deepika Padukone was the only new entrant in Forbes 2016 list of the World's Highest Paid actress. She has done 31 films and utilised her stature as a public figure to speak openly about depression and do something about it. In her 10-year-old career, her job as an actor (during her film promotions) has also entailed saying one thing about gazillion times in different interviews, even more so for a film like xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. She does that every time with grace, poise and bright smile. Especially on Ellen, she was constantly cracking the audience up. So, no, I don't understand why you have to bring her down like that.

The condescension and irony of asking Deepika's "handlers" to make her behave differently when in Hollywood is to debase her. As if she is not capable of forming one coherent thought on her own. So the writer speaks with the knowledge of having appeared on world-renowned television shows several times? A woman of her stature has earned the acclaim to say whatever the heck she wants wherever she wants. It's time we cut her some slack, praise her for what she has achieved in such a short span of time and just let her be.
