On Tuesday, the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said to a leading daily that the rape and murder of two minor tribal girls have been solved. Inspector General Of Police of Bodoland territorial region (BTR) called him to inform him about the outcome of the investigation. "I visited their residence on Sunday. Feeling extremely satisfied that the culprits have been identified," he added.

The case was solved in less than two days after Biswa Sarma directed the IGP, BTR and SP Kokrajhar to carry out an expeditious investigation so that the cause of the twin deaths could be unearthed. During his visit to the residence of the dead siblings at Abhayakhuti village on Sunday, he assured the family that stringent actions would be taken in case of any foul play.

Sarma then directed the inspector-general of police, BTR, and the Kokrajhar police superintendent to ascertain what had actually happened. Subsequently, a special investigation team was constituted by the IGP, BTR to ensure that a proper and expeditious investigation took place.

The two minor girls went missing on Friday afternoon and were later found hanging from a tree. The family members were shocked because there was no reason that the girls could die by suicide and they suspected that there was some sort of foul play in the deaths.

Residents of the Abhayakhuti village thanked the police administration for the prompt action and demanded capital punishment for the culprits who committed the offence. Kokrajhar East MLA, Lawrence Islary lauded the action of the police to nab the accused. He expected that the arrested criminals should be tried in a fast-track court.

According to recent reports, one accused arrested in the case was shot in his right after he tried to escape from the police. An official said, "But in reality, he had hidden a sharp weapon at the spot and attacked the police with it. He attempted to cut the rope he was tied to with the weapon and escape when the police fired two rounds. One bullet hit his right leg." He also added that a constable also got injured in the commotion. Click here to know more about the case.
