Vedika Jawa, the 16-year-old baker resolved to help out the needy right at the age of 13 when she witnessed the multitudes living on the streets while she was on a family trip.

Right after her return, she approached some managers of homeless shelters and offered to bake desserts for those who do not have the chance to avail of treats for themselves. However, she had to face a lot of rejections for the same and some of the managers asked her to come back when she was older. Nevertheless, Jawa persisted.

According to a report by Associated Press, she herself started her non-profit named Bake4Sale that provided free of cost sweets to those in need. The said organisation was started with a small effect when some of her friends and her baking provided sweets to only one shelter in her hometown. Eventually, over 100 workers enrolled themselves with her baking NGO and now she works with 15 homeless shelters in 10 locations across the United States.

The youngster expressed her concern over those who get access to meals from food banks and shelters, however, don’t have access to desserts. "And so, we just want to add a little bit of joy in their lives and show them that they’re cared for and loved," she told AP.

Bake Sale During The Pandemic

Jawa's work had to come to a halt due to the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic. She had to stop working with a few of the shelters as they could no longer take the goods in order to follow the COVID-19 regulations.

However, like everything else, she didn't let even the pandemic stop her. She contacted the local food bank South Hayward Parish which allowed them to deliver the desserts. She mentioned not getting enough help from her own friends but being approached by high schoolers from different states, different cities.

She said, "So many people have lost their loved ones due to this pandemic. So many people have lost their jobs. We think that a simple act of kindness can go a long way for someone who is facing such a difficult time.”
