S Ve Shekher, a prominent Tamil actor and BJP leader, has been sentenced to one month in jail by a court in Chennai for his derogatory and abusive remarks towards women journalists on social media in 2018. Alongside the jail term, the court has also imposed a fine of ₹15,000 on him.

While Shekher has paid the fine, the court has opted to suspend his jail sentence, granting him the opportunity to appeal in a higher court. The verdict highlights the gravity of the charges brought against him, with the court unequivocally stating that the allegations have been substantiated beyond doubt. This decision follows the Madras High Court's refusal to dismiss multiple criminal cases against the BJP leader in 2023.

What is the case?

The controversy stems from Shekher's Facebook post in 2018, where he made disparaging comments about a woman journalist who had raised objections after being patted on the cheek by the then Tamil Nadu Governor, Banwarilal Purohit, during an official event. Shekher's post suggested that the governor should use phenyl to wash his hands after touching her, alongside labeling women journalists as "illiterate," "stupid," and "ugly."

His remarks sparked widespread outrage, leading to the post's deletion. Shekher later issued an apology, attributing the incident to sharing the post without fully comprehending its content.

During the court proceedings, Shekher reiterated his defense, asserting that he shared the post inadvertently. However, the court dismissed his argument, emphasizing the need for social responsibility in online behavior.

The ruling serves as a significant milestone in holding public figures accountable for their actions, particularly in the digital realm, where comments can have far-reaching consequences. It sends a clear message that derogatory and abusive behavior, especially towards marginalized groups, will not be tolerated. As Shekher contemplates his next legal steps, the case sets a precedent for responsible conduct on social media platforms and cements the imperative of upholding respect and dignity for all individuals, irrespective of gender.
