My mother often says, “How can you expect others to love you if you cannot love yourself?” and I have always tried to follow this advice of hers.

We are still kids in our 20s. This is when we are thrust into the real world for the first time, and it can be quite overwhelming and scary. This is when we begin discovering ourselves, our interests, ambitions, and expectations from life; and we cannot discover ourselves if we are busy discovering others. Our early 20s are one of the most important phases of our life. We are mostly students and young professionals, and our career is our top priority.

Now, I am not saying that we should entirely refrain from dating (you totally can if you want to), but it is vital to focus on ourselves first. As exciting and thrilling as romantic endeavours seem, being single also has its perks. I am going to give you 10 reasons why being single in your 20s is a great idea.

1. You will learn to be independent and self-reliant.

2. No depending on someone else. No matter how independent we become, in ">relationships, we end up depending on our partners to a certain degree.

3. You will have more time to figure out your needs and desires.

4. You will have more freedom. We used to love our parents not too long ago, and many of us still do. Now, our partners are nothing like our parents, but we would still have fewer people to answer to.

5. One of the perks of being single is we can indulge and pamper ourselves as much as we want.

6. You will learn the importance of self-care and self-appreciation.

7. You are free to concentrate on your career without needing to think about how it may affect your significant other.

8. There will be less drama. Having relationships unavoidably mean having to deal with some form (if not a lot) of heartache and inconvenience. Having to deal with your own problems should be enough at this age.

9. You will have fewer responsibilities.

10. Once you get a chance to learn what you expect from yourself and life, you will get a better idea of what you expect in a partner.
