However, the sunny exterior of this Bollywood adaptation has resurfaced an age-old debate around nepotism. In a recent conversation of videos addressing the ongoing nepotism debate in Bollywood, Zoya Akhtar offered her perspective on the matter. In one video, she took on the media, indicting it of selectively highlighting only three-star kids out of a total of seven in The Archies. From the paparazzi to the public, the obsession around star kids has long prevailed. The twisted fact that several social media users are hung on to appearances, lives and events that feature star kids shows that the debate is not much the weight if the audience isn't more accepting to outsiders.

The Launch Of The Cast

A user on X weighed in on The Archies and nepotism debate. For the first time, a film has unapologetically featured star kids from some of Bollywood's most prominent families, seemingly serving as a launchpad and not much more. The user's comment reflects a growing dissatisfaction with the blatant use of nepotism in a movie meant to be more than just a star-studded showcase. The debut of nepo-babies in Bollywood often receives special treatment akin to a grand event. The fact that a movie stars a 'nepo-baby' becomes a primary marketing appeal, overshadowing the traditional career trajectory seen in other industries. The term "launch" is associated with these debuts, signifying the industry's tendency to catapult star kids into big-budget blockbusters without the journey of starting small.

Backlash And Star Kids

The release of The Archies trailer sparked backlash, with many viewing the film as a mere launchpad for star kids. The principal cast includes Suhana Khan, Agastya Nanda, and Khushi Kapoor, all belonging to influential Bollywood families. The film's director, Zoya Akhtar, herself a 'nepo-baby,' adds another layer to the critique.

The earlier generation, the ‘true Archies fans’, express disinterest, feeling disconnected. Meanwhile, the younger audience seems indifferent or unaware, unable to forge a connection with the film. The hashtag #TheArchies trends with mixed sentiments: a bit lost, a bit disconnected.

Vedang Raina Steals The Spotlight

The release of The Archies trailer stirred up controversy, with many perceiving the film as a platform exclusively for star kids. In a surprising twist, amidst a cast dominated by 'nepo-babies,' one actor has managed to shine the brightest—Reggie Mantle, portrayed by Vedang Raina. At 23 years old, Vedang Raina, a former model turned actor, has become the scene-stealer of "The Archies." His performance has garnered positive responses.

While Agastya, Suhana, and Khushi, all belonging to influential Bollywood families, have faced reviews ranging from flattering to scathing, Vedang Raina remains unscathed, emerging as the standout performer. His impact on the audience has been nothing short of impressive. Netizens are quick to compare him to the young Ranveer Singh, drawing comparisons to the acclaimed actor's early days in films like Band Baaja Baaraat and Dil Dhadakne Do. Vedang Raina's emergence as the unexpected star of The Archies challenges the prevailing trend of nepotism in Bollywood.

Praise For The Music And Aesthetics

The allure of aesthetics and the brilliance of music selections are Zoya's trademark, and in this venture, she transports viewers back to 90s India, invoking a wave of nostalgia that's both heartwarming and vividly immersive. Beyond the captivating nostalgia, people believe that the film is a musical marvel. They appreciate the way Akhtar integrates the cultural backdrop with the beats of the 90s is a symphony in itself. The soundtrack becomes a character, threading through the storyline seamlessly and carving a musical experience like never before. Another aspect that stands out is the sensitive portrayal of the LGBTQ community's journey. The film effortlessly weaves in the struggles and triumphs of opening up, presenting a narrative that feels genuine and never forced upon the viewers.

Watch Zoya Akhtar's Response To Nepotism Debate

Zoya expressed her disappointment, emphasizing that she was equally excited for all seven debutantes, not just the three prominently featured by the media. She argued that the media's focus on a select few perpetuates the nepotism narrative and neglects the efforts and talents of the entire cast.

Furthermore, in another video, Zoya defended her right to make choices when it comes to using her own money. She differentiated between favouring someone with external funds and using personal resources for casting decisions. Zoya asserted her autonomy, stating that no one could dictate how she spends her own money.

However, these videos sparked a mixed reaction among viewers. While some supported Zoya, appreciating her perspective on the media's role and defending her right to make personal choices, others labelled her as 'privileged.' The debate continues, highlighting the complexity of the nepotism issue in Bollywood and the differing opinions surrounding it.

Seeking Change in Bollywood

The growing consciousness among Indian audiences suggests a need for change. Supporting independent filmmakers and non-nepotism-linked actors could signal to producers the desire for a shift away from the prevalent "launch" culture. The Archies is not just a cinematic adaptation of a beloved comic but a reflection of Bollywood's persistent nepotism issue. As audiences become more discerning, their choices may shape the future of the industry, pushing for inclusivity and opportunities beyond familial ties.
