"Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given his consent to mass weddings of poor girls belonging to minority communities and we have included it in the 100 days' programme of the state government," Minister of State for Minorities Affairs Mohsin Raza told PTI.

Government will give cash of  20,000 rupees each to the eligible candidates, and also take the entire cost of the wedding. Along with the monetary assistance the government will also set up ‘sadbhavna mandaps’ for them.

Initially it is going to be a pilot project, holding around 100 weddings in each district based on the selection of the eligible candidates. But if the move receives a good response, government will turn it into a bi-annual affair.

Sukanya Rane, a sociology graduate says instead of focussing on weddings, the focus should perhaps be on education. "As it is these people spend more on weddings and less on education, maybe after this burden is taken off, maybe in the long run we can see such families to concentrate on the girl's education. Maybe after success of this move government can apply the condition of girl having a minimum education level in order to be a eligible candidate."
