Indian Mountaineering Foundation Gets Its First Woman President In Harshwanti Bisht

Who is Harshwanti Bisht? She is a noted mountaineer from Uttarakhand who has now been elected as the first woman president of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF).

Here's everything you should know about Harshwanti Bisht

  1. She was elected to the post on November 20.
  2. She won 60 out of a total of 107 votes.
  3. She has scripted history by becoming the first woman to be elected as the president of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation. It was founded in the year 1958.
  4. She is 62-years-old. She hails from a village named Sukai in Pauri district.
  5. Promotion of mountaineering and other adventure sports, and bringing more women into the field will be a part of her checklist.
  6. She was also honoured with the Arjuna award for whatever she has achieved in the field of mountaineering.
  7. "My effort will be to increase coordination with the forest and tourism departments and have the policy amended, so that more and more people take to adventure sports," she said.
  8. She pursued a course in mountaineering from the Uttarkashi-based Nehru Institute of Mountaineering in 1975.
  9. In 1981, she scaled the Nanda Devi peak in 1981 which earned her Arjuna award.
  10. She was also a member of an expedition team to Mount Everest in 1984.
  11. She recently retired as the principal of PG College, Uttarkashi. She was also a professor of Economics.

It is heart-warming to see Indian women proving their mettle in the field of mountaineering. For instance, Tashi Yangjom holds the title of the first Indian woman climber to scale Mount Everest in 2021. She began the climb on May 9 and completed her journey on May 11. She reached the peak early 6 am.
