In April 2013, Shah and Kumar raped the girl child in the Gandhi Nagar area and also jabbed her private parts with objects. They ran away after committing the crime and leaving the girl at Shah's room thinking she had died.

The father of the survivor has expressed relief after hearing the verdict and justice being done to his daughter. “Though the trial should have been completed in two years, we are happy we got justice after six years,” he said, reports say.

The case caused ripples in the national capital as only a few months earlier, the gangrape and murder of Jyoti Singh Pandey aka Nirbhaya had happened which had already directed the nation's attention towards the growing reports of heinous rape crimes in the country.

The court has decided to decide the quantum of sentence on January 30.

Shah and Kumar got arrested individually from Muzaffarpur and Darbhanga in Bihar respectively in 2013. While the police filed the charge sheet in the case on May 24, 2013, the court framed the charges on July 11. The judicial system took over five years for the recording of the statement of 57 prosecution witnesses in the POCSO court.

In a recent interview with SheThePeople, she said, “This has been happening for the last seven years. First, it was the hearing dates and now the petitions. I hope that now February 1 will be the final date of execution but the way our justice system supports the convicts somewhere it is a plot against the victims of gender-based crimes. Courts give all the provisions to the perpetrators and not even in a single law acknowledges the state of those fighting for justice.”
