Former US First Lady Barbara Bush

Barbara Bush, Former US first lady passed away at the age of 92. She was the wife of the 41st US President, George H.W. Bush, and mother of the 43rd President George W. Bush. The Bush family stated that she passed away in the early hours of Wednesday morning after a long illness.  Her family issued a statement regarding the same as per reports by the Reuters.

One of only two women in the US history to be both the wife and the mother of United States presidents she was born as Barbara Pierce on June 8, 1925, and grew up in Rye, New York. Her father was Marvin Pierce, publisher of McCall’s magazine.

The family, on Sunday, said that her health was failing as she was not ready to seek any further medical treatment. She, instead wished for comfort care. She was being cared for at her home in Houston, Texas. Bush battled chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart problems for few years. Her son, George W. Bush said in a statement. “Barbara Bush was a fabulous First Lady and a woman unlike any other who brought levity, love and literacy to millions. To us, she was so much more."  Bush was known for her snow-white hair. She was also famous for being fiercely protective of her family. She and her husband celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary in January.

Hailed as the most popular First Lady to preside at the White House, she had an independent streak and a wry sense of humour too. As the first lady from 1989 to 1993, Bush was an advocate for literacy and started the Barbara Bush Foundation to promote this goal.

Former US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, stated, "Barbara Bush was the rock of a family dedicated to public service."

President Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, said in a statement that Barbara Bush was "the advocate of the American Family."

Bill Clinton called Lady Bush "fierce and feisty and also the one who showed everyone what an honest, vibrant and full life looks like."

In one of their last public appearances, the Bushes attended the 2017 Super Bowl in Houston. Only a few days before, the couple was released from a hospital. George had been treated for pneumonia and Barbara for bronchitis.
