Stressing on the need to have a better sex-ratio, the Agra division of North Central Railway (NCR) has started painting its railway stations  pink.

Umesh Garg, divisional commercial inspector of Agra-Jaipur section, said, “The idea of painting the station in pink and setting up art depicting the state’s culture was mooted by senior divisional commercial manager Rashmi Baghel. We hired local painters from Bharatpur and even from Agra, who completed the work in less than a month. The art portrays monuments like Hawa Mahal and other monuments associated with the royal heritage of Rajasthan.”

These pink coloured railway stations are symbolic of the government’s commitment to women empowerment.”

Baghel said, “Initially we thought of just painting and portraying local culture at the Agra-Jaipur rail section so as to make railway stations look beautiful. But with pink we brought in the theme of fighting for better sex ratio and create awareness about it. These pink coloured railway stations are symbolic of the government’s commitment to women empowerment.”

Percentage of women employees

There are 16,000 railway employees in the Agra division. Among them, nearly 5% are women employees, out of which a couple of them are station superintendents, the rest are loco-pilots.

While painting railway stations in pink is a good step, we hope they manage to solve the purpose of bettering the sex-ratio of the area. As the real change will come only when people shed their archaic mindsets and accept the girl child wholeheartedly.
