The families agreed. The bride would remain in her parental home until puberty. But the move to her married home kept getting postponed – she just didn’t want to stop studying. When she graduated, her husband finally asked her when she intended moving in with him. She is said to have flung the mangalsutra in his face, before sailing overseas, eventually remarrying, and returning to head a women’s college. While grand-aunt became a feminist icon for numerous women, the mangalsutra incident was enshrined as a cautionary tale in family lore. To them, she would always be the family black sheep.
