Y20 Goal For Gender Sensitisation

The Y20 goal for gender sensitisation was declared at the 4th Y20 Consultation Meeting. It was held at Symbiosis International University in Pune. The Government of India held the meeting in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The meeting discussed conflict surrounding gender, reconciliation, and peacebuilding keeping in mind the motto of India's Presidency, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam.

The theme for the meeting was ‘Peacebuilding and Reconciliation: Ushering in an Era of No War- the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’. This youth forum of the G20 allows delegates also to have a conversation about climate action.

The Y20 Goal For Gender Sensitisation Discussed At The Consultation Meeting 

The discussion was led by Ms Trisha Shetty, a human rights activist who discussed the status of women in Afghanistan and violence against women.

She proposed gender sensitisation programs to be a part of school curriculums to protect minorities and battle gender violence. She stressed that laws regulating gender violence could not see successful implementation unless there is active reportage of such crimes.

Panelist Mr Rajesh Shrinivas the Executive Director of Sangama acknowledged the milestone judgement passed that decriminalised homosexuality in India. He discussed how it was important for the LGBTQ+ community to hold relationships and have the same legal rights as others.

Solidarity and sensitisation toward the community are needed and so is the recognition of different identities for changes in society.

He stated that one could attribute transphobia to the extension of a colonised mindset. Indulgence in same-sex ties was not foreign to India and it was colonisation that associated shame with it. He conveyed his desire that the G20 Leaders Declaration states 64 nations decriminalise homosexuality.

The Founder of Black Girl's Dream Initiative, Panelist Ms Karimot Odebode discussed the existing gender inequality in society. She discussed issues such as dissent against the feminist movement, policing of female bodies, and female genital mutilation (FGM). She reiterated the need for more women representation at leadership levels to bring about gender policy amelioration.

She added that the government of nations should play a more active role in devising and implementing gender policy. She proposed gender transformative education being introduced at schools and called leaders to action.

Academic aspirants from India and G20 nations, invitees, young delegates, and competition winners formed the audience of the fourth Y20 Consultation Meeting.
