Asked To Compromise In Rape Case, Minor Dalit Girl Dies By Suicide

A 17-year-old Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district died by suicide after her family was reportedly pushed into making a deal in a rape complaint they had filed against a neighbour, who had also threatened her.

Recently, a 17-year-old Dalit girl from Uttar Pradesh's Barabanki district died by suicide after police reportedly pushed her family to make a deal in a rape complaint they had filed against a neighbour, who they also said had threatened her.

The accused, who is also a member of the Dalit community, was wounded in the leg by police late on Thursday after he opened fire at them while being brought to retrieve a gun he had buried nearby, according to authorities. Sub-inspector Yogendra Singh, the case's investigation officer, has been suspended for suspected negligence while a departmental investigation is being carried out.

UP Dalit Girl Dies By Suicide

On Thursday, a case of aiding suicide was filed against the 28-year-old suspect. Upon learning of the girl's suicide, a family member filed a complaint, stating that his niece died by suicide on Thursday and on June 17, a complaint was made against a neighbour for raping his niece. The accused further said that the accused was threatening her, which is why she hanged herself.

The family claims that neighbourhood police officers coerced them into making a deal with the man accused of rape. The family of the deceased stated that even though Police wrote an FIR but forced them to sit until the evening. The girl's uncle said that they forced them to sign a compromise and claimed that our girl's honour was at stake. 

The mother of the girl said in a statement that the accused warned his daughter that they would rape her again, humiliate her, and prevent her from showing her face anywhere. Despite their repeated protestations, the cops compelled us to make a deal.

She added that the accusers had claimed that nobody could put them in jail and since no one had heard them at the police station, they had also gone to Barabanki (the district headquarters).

SP Dinesh Kumar Singh stated that a complaint was filed in accordance with Indian Penal Code sections 376 (rape) and 511 (attempt to commit offences carrying a life sentence or other type of life sentence) and the victim had previously had a medical examination.
