A 23-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and murdered by six men including a juvenile in Delhi. The incident took place on the night of 16 December 2012.

There is no one answer to the question whether justice is delivered or delayed in the Nirbhaya case. For me it is both, so it doesn’t spark joy because of the perpetual state of outrage women have to build to generate support in claiming justice that should be delivered to us without any blame, question and delay.

“I was hoping that the review petition will be rejected today,” mother of Nirbhaya, Asha Devi said. “Like we have waited for seven years, we will wait for one more day. Hopefully, the review petition will be rejected tomorrow and they will be hanged soon,” she told.

The Nirbhaya rape and murder case, it just shook us to our core. So many of us felt uncomfortable and unsafe, to execute a simple act, that of walking down a street at night. Seven years on, the fear and cautiousness have become a habit. Why?

“The system sucks. Even to withdraw a case, no matter which country you are based in, you have to come to the court where the case is proceeding,” says the woman.
