When it comes to how the female reproductive system works, men tend to know the least about the subject. Most of them hardly know anything about periods and the problems relating to them; which could be the reason why they tend to downplay and stereotype them. Boys, mostly excluded from sex education classes, often get their basic knowledge about female anatomy from pornography, which is not only misplaced but also creates false expectations from a future partner.

Ask a man about sex, he becomes a know-it-all. Ask the same man about the clitoris, he wouldn't even have heard the term earlier. Most men also do not understand the difference between male and female orgasm, or that women too can climax during sex, for that matter.

It is important to know about your partner's sexual and reproductive health because it will not only make you a better partner, but a more compassionate person. So if you are up for the task, we are here to clear the air for you.

Here are some common misconceptions that men have about how the female reproductive system works:

Women don't pee through their vaginas

A common misconception is that women pee out of their vaginas. This happens because for men their penis acts both as their external sex organ and also excretes urine. However, the truth is that women pee through the urethra which is located above their vagina.

That's not how it works. Since we have different openings for excreting urine and the reproductive system, the two body functions are carried out separately.

The pregnancy fat does not disappear

Ever watched a movie where the character goes back to their normal body shape five minutes after giving birth? Yeah, that does not happen in real life. A mother's post-partum body needs time to go back to its usual shape which also takes exercise and diet. In many cases though, women don't ever go back to their pre-pregnancy shape, but that is nothing to feel inferior about, right? She just nurtured a tiny human in her body- and how wonderfully her body made that happen is something to only be proud of.

Women do not bleed blue liquid during periods

Stop believing those commercials which show women all happy and comfortable after using sanitary pads. We are hardly near any comfort. And blood is always red, whether it comes out of a scrapped knee or during periods. Our uterus doesn't have the magical power to turn blood from red to blue.

Vaginas do not "loosen up" after each intercourse

The vaginal muscles are way more flexible than you think. They expand when a woman is aroused and contract back again after the intercourse. The only time vaginas loosen up is either due to childbirth or surgery. Not because the woman has multiple sexual partners.

Women's breasts do not enlarge due to sex

Please stop thinking that. Breast enlargement can only happen with surgery or with weight gain. Sex has nothing to do with breast enlargement, no matter what your misguided peers are telling you.

Not all vaginal discharge comes from orgasm

The next time you spot a crusty, white substance on your girlfriend's or wife's underwear, please do not think that she has had an orgasm. It's just vaginal discharge that the vagina releases in order to keep itself clean.

Women can only orgasm by vaginal stimulation

While it may be true for some women, there are also others who require clitoral stimulation to hit the spot. For women, orgasm is a combination of multiple factors- their comfort level during sex, how well their partner stimulates, them and how he reciprocates to their directions or demands.

Women have body hair. Down there too.

Snap out of your sexual fantasies and come back to reality. The porn stars who have set unrealistic sexual expectations for you go through regular grooming and surgeries to look that way. It's not real. We have hairy bodies and while numerous women choose to shave or wax, even own there, a lot of us like it the natural way. To each her own, but men need to learn that pubic hair comes as naturally to women as it does to them.

Tampons do not give us pleasure

Not all things that we stick inside our vaginas give us pleasure. Some just do their job of absorbing the blood during periods so that we can carry on with our daily lives.
