The rising tennis star Coco Gauff will now face the winner of Sofia Kenin vs Zhang Shuai in the fourth round of Aussie Open.
Gauff beat Williams 7-6 (5), 6-3 on Monday. “I was a bit shocked. I’m sure everyone was a bit shocked,” said Gauff.
Gauff has been steadily winning the games since she started out pro. She was at 685 in the world at the start of 2019 and is currently ranked at 110.
After making a stunning breakthrough at Wimbledon last month, the 15-year-old was given a wildcard entry into the US Open, making her the youngest player in the draw.
If Gauff wins Wimbledon this year, she’d be the youngest ever to do so, after 15-year-old Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Dod who won the championship more than a century ago, back in 1887.
American tennis prodigy Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff, at 15 years, just became the youngest player in the Open era to advance into Wimbledon. In the first round, her challenge will be compatriot Venus Williams. Their match will mark the biggest age gap between two players since 2004, Venus is 23 years older than Gauff.
