The activist, Anannyah Kumari Alex was a celebrity make-up artist, stage anchor, radio jockey and was also the first member of her community to file a nomination in Kerala Assembly elections.

Alex, who was Kerala’s first transwoman to contest in Assembly elections allegedly died by suicide on 20 July.

Alex underwent the surgery last year in June and stated that she was facing serious health issues ever since she did. She added that she was unable to work due to severe pain even after a whole year of the surgery.

Anannyah Kumari Alex had recently alleged medical negligence by a Kochi hospital where she underwent sex reassignment surgery a year ago.

The first trans woman to do so, she represented the Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) from the Vengara constituency in Malappuram district.

She is suspected to have died by suicide, as per the police statement.

The 28-year-old filed nomination papers as a candidate for the Democratic Social Justice Party (DSJP) from the Vengara constituency in Malappuram district in the Assembly elections in April.

Anannyah Kumari Alex alleged that DSJP party leaders “refused to take action against the person who abused” her verbally.

Anannyah Kumari Alex is the first transgender candidate contesting for the Kerala assembly polls. She is known for also being Kerala’s first transgender radio jockey and hopes to represent the trans community as a candidate.
