Who Is Rupa Dutta? Bengali Actor Arrested For Stealing Purses At Kolkata Book Fair

In 2020, Rupa Dutta had wrongly accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual harassment.

The Bengali actor Rupa Dutta, who has been part of a Hindi film and a television serial, was arrested from the Kolkata International Book Fair ground in Saltlake, on Saturday evening. She was picked by the police on charges of pickpocketing. Dutta was arrested under the suspicion by the police after she was found dropping purses in a garbage can.

The police reportedly searched her bag and found some more purses and a sum of Rs 65,000. An unnamed official at the Saltlake Police station told the Hindustan Times that the actor was carrying a diary that had the accounts of all the money that she had stolen. The officer reported that she has confessed to stealing purses during the interrogation.

On Sunday afternoon, she was produced at a court in Saltlake. Although, many other media publications have also mentioned that the amount in the bag was Rs 75,000 and Indian Express reported that the sum amount was Rs 65,760.

This is not the first time the actor has been caught in a controversy. In 2020, she had wrongly accused filmmaker Anurag Kashyap of sexual harassment. In that case, she had shared screenshots of conversations on social media and accused Kashyap of sexual harassment. She had alleged that Kashyap has sent her inappropriate messages on Facebook.

The Times Of India stated that she had shared the screenshots of the conversation on Twitter and wrote, "There is no respect for any woman in the eyes of Anurag Kashyap. Which I came to know after knowing him. That's why Payal Ghosh's allegation is absolutely correct. Anurag Kashyap should get the harshest punishment..."

Post investigation, it was found out that the name mentioned on the screenshots did match with that of Kashyap's first name but it was not him and somebody else. It was also discovered that the actor had never met Kashyap.

She was part of the film Saathi: The Companion in 2005. According to TOI, Her Twitter bio mentions that she has been part of the Hindi television show titled "Jai Maa Vaishnodevi."
