There is no denying that motherhood brings along a whirlwind of emotions with it. Further, it brings along with it a new perspective and an even deeper respect for your own parents. Recently, new-mom Serena Williams took to Reddit to express her gratitude to her mother, Oracene Price. Reddit is a social platform co-founded by Alexis Ohanian, her fiance.
The post is a candid account of the celebration of her mother through which praises her for her fierce strength and for being a role model. However, Williams also addresses the volley of body-shaming she has faced in her life. How people have indicated that her strong physique is masculine. Also, how she has had to deal with accusations that her performance on the court was a result of drugs.
She thanks her mom for teaching them the power of a black woman. And commended her on display of sheer "strength and class".
Serena then compares the physical similarities she shares with her newborn. She stresses that the criticism she has dealt with is something she does not want her daughter to go through. She goes on to say, "I was looking at my daughter (OMG, yes, I have a daughter) and she has my arms and legs! My exact same strong, muscular, powerful, sensational arms and body. I don't know how I would react if she has to go through what I've gone through since I was a 15-year-old and even to this day."
Williams, gave birth to her first daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. earlier this month.
It has been pointed out that Serena’s letter came just after the publication of Maria Sharapova's book titled 'Unstoppable'. The book has references to Williams’ "thick arms and thick legs".
The letter also seems to allude to remarks by tennis commentator John McEnroe, who said earlier this year that Williams would rank 700th if she played on the men's circuit.
We continue to be in awe of this gutsy lady.
