Rajasthan Women Make Eco-Friendly Cow Dung Diyas For Diwali

A group of women from Rajasthan are making eco-friendly Diwali diyas using cow dung. The rural women who work at a cowshed in the state are promoting "Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vocal for Local initiative." The diyas are not only made from cow manure, which is biodegradable, but are decorated without any harmful colour or adornments.

Sangita Gurjar, a woman who works at the said cow shelter, told ANI, "Cow dung is believed to be pure in our tradition. Over 100 women are making 1,000 pieces of diyas each day." 

The owner of the cowshed, Dr Atul said that India is dependent on China for products that are used to celebrate "our" festival. "So we have taken this initiative to produce organic earthen lamps, where thousands of women could be employed in the state. It will bring an alternate source of income to the cowsheds as well. It is eco-friendly and promotes the vision of “Vocal for Local” as well,” he said.

Pinki, a woman who also works at the cow shelter said that she felt happy "about using local products to celebrate our festivals."
