The incident allegedly occurred on Saturday when the security guards were trying to vacate the Communication and Information Services Centre occupied by the students to hamper registration for the winter examinations. Two others named in the FIR are former JNUSU office-bearers Sarika Chaudhary and Geeta. The FIR also stated that the accused manhandled the women security guards, verbally abused them and threatened them of dire consequences if they opened the lock of the CIS office. As per the complaint, despite the agitating students boycotting registration, a few CIS staff members managed to enter the building and restore the information system which was shut down by the students.

The administration says that a large number of students entered CIS and disrupted the normal ongoing registration process. On Saturday, the JNUSU released a statement condemning in, "the strongest possible terms the actions of the JNU administration which is using the security as its private lumpen army". They added that near the CIS, "security guards in the number of 30-40 mobilized, switched off the lights and like the police did at Jor Bagh, attacked students". "They were shamefully wearing masks," it had said.

Then on Sunday, major violence erupted in the university campus where a masked mob of 60-70 persons carrying sticks and iron rods were seen beating those who were protesting against fee hike issue in the campus. The mob comprised of part students and part unknown persons from outside the university. Around 20 students were injured in the attack including Ghosh who was beaten up with iron rods on her head as she claimed in a press conference on Monday.

She said they also punched her until she fell on the ground after which they ran away. "Fortunately, some students saw her and immediately rescued her and took her to AIIMS trauma centre," Ghosh recalled.
