The wooden spinning wheels were given to them by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). The PM saw the exhibition and also tried a little bit of handloom.

Five hundred charkhas will help create direct employment at the doorstep of these villagers, KVIC said, as reported by NDTV. Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal also spoke at the event, saying that these charkhas will help generate income in the houses of these women.

Modi spoke about how Khadi should not just be symbolic of the nation but also of fashion in the modern day and age. “Khadi is a priority for us. A charkha at home brings more income.”
