UP Government Officer Arrested: An under secretary-level officer at Bapu Bhavan in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the police on the charges of molesting the contractual worker. The survivor had registered a police complaint on October 29 but no arrest was made as the accused was “well-connected”. The officer was eventually arrested after a video of the incident went viral.
The survivor alleged that she had been facing harassment at hands of the accused since 2018. She said that the accused had threatened to get her sacked from the job if she complained about the incident. Recently she made a video of the accused, Iccharam Yadav, forcing himself on her as she tries to push him away.
Taking the video as evidence, she registered a complaint at Huusainganj Police Station on October 29. The survivor alleged that the police did not take action because the accused was well-connected considering his position as under-secretary. The accused was posted as section-in-charge of the minority welfare department.
Out of frustration, she put out the video online and it went viral. According to the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADCP) Central Khyati Garh, “The woman was called a few times to record her statement. After recording the statements and examining the evidence from both parties, action will be taken.”
This is not the first time in Uttar Pradesh a woman had to make a video and share it online in order to get justice in sexual assault and rape cases. Yesterday, a viral video by a woman threatening to self-immolate at Yogi Adityanath’s rally in Rampur if the accused is not arrested went viral leading to immediate action by police. The case was against a police inspector who was accused of sexually assaulting the survivor along with his friend.
