Shahdara Woman Gangrape: Survivor Paraded, DCW's Swati Maliwal Takes Notice

The assault was carried out by the family members of a boy who died by suicide and the family blamed the survivor for the incident.

A 20-year-old gangrape survivor was allegedly paraded on the streets of Delhi by a group of women. In a video, shared by the Delhi Commission For Women chairperson Swati Maliwal, the survivor alleges assault by a group of women. Her hair was cut forcibly while she was assaulted on a crowded street and women cheered along.

Taking notice of the incident on the street of the capital city of India, Maliwal has sent a notice to the Delhi Police. Maliwal informed that the survivor was allegedly kidnapped from her house, her hair was cut and her face was painted in black before she was paraded around and assaulted.

This incident took place at an east Delhi locality, Shahdara and was allegedly carried out due to personal enmity. The NDTV reported that a senior police official said that the sexual assault incident took place due to personal enmity and the police have arrested four people in the case and the survivor undergoing counselling.

Maliwal in her social media wrote that she met with the survivor and that survivor was allegedly gangraped by illegal liquor sellers. According to Maliwal, the survivor was allegedly taken to a house in Kasturba Nagar, where three people allegedly gangraped her, while there were many women in the house. These women, according to Maliwal were inciting the men to commit the crime. The chairperson also stated that the survivor's hair was cut and she was forced to wear a garland of slippers. Her face was painted black and she was allegedly beaten, then paraded in the entire locality for an hour.

"All criminal men and women should be arrested and the girl and her family should be given security," wrote Maliwal.

The Backstory

The assault was carried out by the family members of a boy who died by suicide and the family blamed the survivor for the incident. According to the survivor's sister, the survivor is married and has a child. She had recently rented a room after the death of the boy and was picked from Karkardooma by the deceased boy's uncle.

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal retweeted the video shared by Maliwal on Twitter and wrote, "This is very shameful. How did the criminals get so much courage? I urge the Union Home Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to instruct the police to take strict action, pay attention to the law and order situation. Delhiites will not tolerate such heinous crime and criminals at any cost."
