Tamil Nadu deaf woman rape case: A Tamil Nadu court Friday awarded a man life imprisonment for raping a deaf and mute woman, as per reports. Incidentally, the order for his life term was passed on October 22, the same date on which the rape reportedly occurred in 2017. The convict was directed to pay a compensation of Rs 25000 to the survivor.
Identified as one R Ranganathan, the man raped a 47-year-old woman when she was alone at home four years ago in the Cuddalore area, as per Times of India. She was living with her cousin at the time and told them of the incident when they returned home from work.
A complaint was lodged with police authorities in Panruti and Ranganathan was booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Tamil Nadu Deaf Woman Rape Case: Similar Crimes In Recent Times
Earlier this month, reports from Madhya Pradesh revealed a horrific incident wherein a hearing and speech impaired 14-year-old girl was raped by six people in an isolated area in Shahdol. Among the accused were four minor boys. They reportedly captured the sexual abuse on camera and leaked them on social media.
When the visuals reached her father, he came to know of the crime and complained to the police. All accused were arrested.
In a similar incident, another deaf and mute minor girl was gangraped in Bihar in January this year. She was sexually assaulted when she stepped out to graze her cattle. As per reports, the accused tried to damage her eyes so she could not identify them.
Last year in Tamil Nadu, a 70-year-old man was reportedly arrested for raping a hearing-speech impaired minor girl over a period of five months. Police revealed the accused was a neighbour of the survivor and his granddaughter was friends with her.
