The straight-faced comic girl, Sumukhi Suresh is back with another of her creation on Amazon Prime. Suresh, who had last created the widely-appreciated 'Behti Naak' on Youtube, was also seen in many AIB videos and a few webseries. Now she has become one of the first female comediennes to have their own show on Amazon Prime with 'Pushpavalli - A truish story'. Not only has she created the show, she is also playing the main lead.

Pushpavalli is about a girl who takes the concept of “go all out for love” a little too seriously. “She moves cities to pursue this man who she briefly meets and pursues in the most questionable manner. Pushpavalli will make you learn to like and eventually hate the lead character for the way she is and also relate to her flaws,” Suresh says about her character in the film.

Asked why the title says 'based on Truish events'? Suresh told SheThePeople.TV, “This show is heavily based on true events. I am also a Tamilian who grew up north and the fact that I also moved and did a lot of cringe-worthy things to get attention and also fell flat in my pursuits is quite true.”

What led to her create the show, she quipped, “It is about time, isn’t it?”

Suresh talked about her character in the series, “People keep mentioning how there is a dearth in female narrative and I finally I had a potentially good story. I was sure that I had characters the audience would react to (negatively or positively) and this is how it began."

"I usually like creating honest and hopefully flawed characters and “Pushpavalli” is that. She is definitely not right in what she is doing and you can see that but you also root for her, hope that she stops messing up at some point.”

On creating a grey shades character

“It is so commonplace for women to play a negative or a positive character that we have forgotten that women in general have shades of grey. They are complex and have multiple layers to them. I wanted to write a story about a grey character in love and I went ahead and did that.”

“The best thing is that the director of the show is a woman (Debbie Rao). She understood all of this instantly and we did our best to capture that.”

First comedienne to be on Amazon Prime

I feel very excited about it. Hope this is the beginning of more stories from funny women! I wanted to have something on Amazon Prime when I was ready for it and I didn’t want to rush into it. It makes me glad that Amazon Prime was patient and gave me the time. But I think my worries and nervousness are similar to that of any content creator.

On the state of comediennes in the country

We are increasing in number for sure. There are more women in the open mic scene, more women trying out sketches. But what we need is to write content for ourselves rather than wait for others to write characters and stories for us. It’s ok if we make mistakes and don’t land the first few times. But we should definitely write stories and characters for ourselves more. It’s unfair to expect men to write characters for us and get it right all the time.

Suresh looks visibly excited for her show. She wants the audience “to have a laugh, yet feel for the characters”.

“I genuinely want them to be confused about how they feel for Pushpavalli. Also, I want them to want season 2 :D,” says the cheeky comedienne.
