Success Story: Eight-year-old Mumbai Girl wins Bronze at Commonwealth Chess Championship

Eight-year-old Suhaani Lohia's success story will make you believe in the axiom that age is just a number. A chess aficionado, she has bagged the bronze medal in the girls' Under-8 category of the Commonwealth Chess Championship, 2017. The tournament organised in New Delhi concluded on Monday with Suhaani scoring 5.5 out of 7 games.

According to a media release, she was competing with Hiya Panchal. They both had 5.5 points and were tied for the second spot. However, a tie-breaker sealed the fate of Suhaani as she settled for a bronze medal.

The gold medal was bagged by India's WCM Shefali AN from Karnataka, ranked no 1 with a tally of 6 points.

Balaji Guttula, the chief coach said, “Suhaani winning the bronze medal is all because of her commitment and hard work and I congratulate her. She is a bright, talented girl and with the proper guidance and grooming she has the capabilities to become a world beater and India’s next most celebrated chess player.”

Last year, Suhaani Lohia had become the first Woman Candidate Master (WCM) from the metropolis. Suhaani has standard and rapid rating of 1139 and a blitz rating of 1117.

Last month, another Mumbai girl Ahana Shah won a bronze medal with a score of 4 points out of 5 in the Under-7 category of the 2017 Kenilworth Junior Open Rapid Chess Tournament in the United Kingdom.

Young girls like Suhaani and Ahana are an inspiration for everyone. Their dedication and diligence for the game is commendable.
