SheThePeople.TV recently hosted a power-packed session for Power Breakfast in Jaipur. The discussion revolved around Secrets to Leadership.

“For me, leadership is about making more leaders, not followers,” says Nisha Jain Grover, who was one of the panelists at the event. She started Vatsalya Legacy to help children with disabilities empower themselves and succeed. Over the course of 15 years, she has trained 10,500 teachers, and counselled almost 8,200 children and 9,700 parents.

Swati Souls has an equally intriguing story. She was born as Swati Kaushal and decided to change her surname to ‘Souls’ when she decided to pursue a career in art. She is now one of Jaipur's most well-known artists. She left her parents' house at a young age, as they were pressuring her to get married. Since then, she has fended for herself. The key is to keep trying, and trying out different concepts, she said, at the discussion.

More than 20 highly motivated women entrepreneurs also participated in a discussion about what it takes to build and retain an effective team.

Leadership is about delegation:

Sheenu Jhawar, the COO of Apex Hospitals, said that someone can only be a leader if they cease to be the go-to person for their employees. "As you rise, your role is to solve the problems of your team," she said.  Your role becomes more about managing a team, she says.

It all boils down to respect:

Ultimately, what holds the team together is respect, agreed the entrepreneurs. Nisha Jain Grover said that in her office, employees are not allowed to make fun of each other. They are allowed to talk about anything other than themselves. She also has a policy where employees can anonymously place requests for what they want changed in the company. This way they feel a sense of ownership and responsibility, she says.

Hard choices:

The discussion turned to how women can rise to the top. What you prioritise, and how you make choices, matters a lot, the entrepreneurs seem to agree.

Shweta Chopra, of Chopra Associates, said that it is all about give and take. "If somebody is doing something for you, you will also have to do your turn, and do something for them," she said.
