Indian-Origin Woman Navjit Kaur Brar Elected As Canadian City Brampton's Councillor

The mother of three Navjit Kaur Brar beat the former Conservative member of parliament candidate for Brampton West, Jermaine Chambers.

Indian-origin Sikh woman Navjit Kaur Brar was elected as the new councillor of the Canadian city Brampton. The Indo-Canadian healthcare worker became the first turban-wearing Sikh woman to be elected as a city councillor of Brampton.

Brar, a respiratory therapist was elected as the Brampton city councillor in the recent municipal council polls after she won the race.

The mother of three Navjit Kaur Brar beat the former Conservative member of parliament candidate for Brampton West, Jermaine Chambers. Brar secured 28.85 percent of the votes. Chambers came in second with 22.59 percent of the votes and Carmen Wilson came in third at 15.41 percent.

The Mayor of Brampton Patrick Brown congratulated Brar and said, “She was a selfless and dedicated front-line healthcare worker during the pandemic.” He added that Brar would be a “phenomenal addition” to the Brampton City Council.

Even though Navjit Kaur Brar has little political experience, she managed to win the election and became the Brampton city councillor.

She had previously run for the post in Brampton West but lost to the current Progressive Conservative Amarjot Sandhu.

Brar focused on three areas of development, building new infrastructure, reducing crime, and improving road safety. She said that she believes that people can relate to her. She said, “I’m a mom of three and a lot of people in Brampton are families.”

She added that she had spoken to the citizens of Brampton and “the sentiment I hear is that they are all hurting, they feel unheard, they feel left behind.”

Brar spoke about how she planned on working hard to represent all demographics in her ward. She said, “I’m so proud of all Bramptonians who have voted, making sure our voices are being heard more than ever before”.

The respiratory therapist and city councillor earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto. Brar went on to Canadore College in North Day, Ontario to get a Respiratory Therapy diploma.

She entered the medical field in 2011 when she accepted a position as a respiratory therapist.
