Nupur Sharma

Nupur Sharma was the most searched person in India this year. The former Bharatiya Janta Party spokesperson found herself in a major controversy after she made a remark about Prophet Muhammad on national television during a debate on a news channel. Her comments sparked a nationwide debate between several religious sectors, and the citizen jumped into the conversation with several opinions on the matter.

While the BJP suspended Sharma from the party following the backlash, she became a household name and hence the most searched person on the internet in India, according to Google trends.

Droupadi Murmu

President Droupadi Murmu was the second most searched person in India this year. Hers was a story that inspired millions of people not just in India but also in the world. 64-year-old Murmu made history by becoming the first woman from a tribal community to come this far and come head of the nation.

On July 25, 2022, Murmu took was sworn in and took oath as the 15th President of India. She became the second woman after former president Pratibha Patil to be elected as the President.

Sushmita Sen

The former Miss Universe became the fifth most searched person on the internet in India in 2022. Sen had a crackling year as she found herself in the news for varied reasons and inspired her way into the heart of the nation with her grace and professional ability on screen. Sen, who starred in the successful seasons of the Hotstar thriller show Aarya, was conferred with the International Association of Working Women Award and several other accolades this year for her outstanding performance.

Another news that captivated the Indian audience about her was her link-up with business tycoon Lalit Modi, who had announced their relationship via social media.

Sen, who has always held her dignity among the few controversies she has found herself in, gave back to trolls who maligned her image and called her a gold digger. Her statement: "I dig deeper than gold" will always be the most popular comeback in the history of social media. She will soon be seen in Taali, a film based on the life of transgender activist Gauri Sawant.

Anjali Arora 

Social media influencer and dancer Anjali Arora's rise to fame made her the sixth most searched person in India. Arora participated in Kangana Ranaut-backed reality Lock Upp and made headlines because of her competitive ability.

Amber Heard

One of Hollywood's ugly divorce cases was long-standing news for several months as the couple Amber Heard and Johnny Depp battled it out in court. The court trial, which was a defamation trial and not a divorce case, was highly publicised; to an extent that the media and public trial that was simultaneously ongoing targeted Heard and painted her in a negative light even before the verdict was announced.

While the court ruled in favour of Depp, Heard's arguments and stand amidst backlash made details around their marriage among the top written headlines around the globe. Incidentally, Heard became the tenth most googled person in India and the third most googled person in the world this year.
