In a bid to honour the team’s most successful Captain — Mithali Raj — Telangana Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao has announced Rs 1 crore land reward to Raj after a great feat conquered at the Lord’s. Team India put up an excellent show, under the guidance of Raj in the ICC World Cup, 2017. On July 23, against England, they were just nine runs short of winning their first Women’s World Cup title.
Following the grand welcome of the Indian women’s cricket team at the Mumbai airport, the 34-year-old player is finally being recognized and deserves every bit of it. Raj has been proving her mettle each time India steered to play a match but for 11-long-years she is paying due to get the ‘promised’ land.
If reports are to be believed, Raj had been promised a plot of land back in 2005, but the cricketer had hard times making that to reality.
While at the airport, Mithali was summoned by the Chief Minister at his camp office. Rao bestowed her a cash award of Rs 1 crore and 600 square yards of land in Banjara Hills. He also announced Rs 25 lakh for her coach RSR Murthy.
“You have played wonderfully at the World Cup. We thought you will surely win the final too. Unfortunately, we lost by a slender margin. But your team performed well and the whole nation watched your performance. Even I watched the match. You are the pride of Telangana and Hyderabad city. You should win several more victories in future. On behalf, of the people in Telangana State and on my behalf I congratulate you. The government will stand by you,” Chandrasekhar Rao said, TOI reported.
She expressed amusement to be called on to CM’s camp office. An ecstatic Mithali said of her meeting with the CM,
“He told me that he had watched the final and what was most amazing was that he knew all my world records and scores. That has given such a personal touch to his appreciation of my game.”
“Everyone at the camp office were so eager to meet me and hear about the matches. It was a thrilling feeling to be the cynosure of so many top officials of our state. All these years I used to play for my small band of well-wishers and family but now to see that my performances brings so much of joy to so many people is a humbling experience,” she added.
Earlier, India skipper and 9 other from the team were presented with Rs 1.30 crore cash reward by the Union minister, Suresh Prabhu. He also shouted out deserving honour for Captain Mithali Raj and now the latest hero Harmanpreet Kaur with officer rank.
