This money translates to roughly 3.20 crore rupees. She sold the original photo as a non-fungible token (NFT) after she and her father Dave Roth consulted a few meme celebrities. As a result of this, Zoe Roth will get 10 per cent of the sum every time the image is re-sold. For over a decade, she and her family had no agency on the meme which had her face on it.

  2. She is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying peace, war and defence. After graduating, she has planned to take a gap year before pursuing a degree in International Relations.
  3. She became an instant meme-favourite when a photo of hers started getting circulated on social media.
  4. In the photo, she could be seen flashing a devilish smile at the camera, while firefighters try to put out a house fire in the background.
  5. The picture was taken by her father while she was roaming around her neighbourhood in North Carolina. She was four years old at that time.
  6. The picture then went viral in no time and has been shared about a million times in the last decade. That's how she became popular as the 'Disaster Girl', and became a favourite among meme-makers.
  7. Soon after, the Roth family decided to take control of the Disaster Girl meme. They listed the "Disaster Girl" token on April 16 for a 24-hour auction. The price for it reached up to 180 Ether which is a cryptocurrency worth up to $430,000. It's worth then shot up to $470,000.
  8. The auction was then subsequently won by a bidder called 3FMusic who gave 180 Ether for the image.
  9. By selling the image as an NFT, Zoe Roth retains the copyright for it.
  10. Zoe now plans to donate the money (which is in cryptocurrency form) to charities, and also use it to clear her student loans.
