Sister Act: Meet This All-Nun Rock Band

Eleven Catholic nuns are part of a rock band! Hailing from 8 countries, the nuns call the band 'Sierras', which is Spanish for 'The Servants'.

The band has more than a million YouTube views, performs internationally and has released two records

The nuns are all in their 20s and 30s, and perform in their black and white habit. They are hopeful that they will earn a Latin Grammy nomination.

At first, they started playing together as a hobby. They met in Peru, where they used to help poor and incarcerated women during the day. They soon started writing original music, put out a CD. It generated a lot of interest in Peru.

"Our goal is that through the melodies, our lyrics will reach people,” says Sister Andrea Garcia.

Their songs are reaching people who are not even churchgoers. “I am not a churchgoer, but I love this music,” said 53-year-old real estate agent, Milagros Lizarraga, who helped start a Peruvian community organization in Southern California. “I love it because they are breaking a paradigm. They are out of the box.”

The nuns were recently invited to play for Pope Francis in Juarez, Mexico. They have even travelled to Chicago for a series of concerts.

The band also recently travelled to Southern California for a concert. They drew in a crowd of 4,000 people when they headlined a Spanish-language Catholic music festival.

"I'm very proud about my habit," says Sister Monica who plays percussion. "And I'm very proud to sing rock music with a habit."

We love how gutsy these nuns are!

All-women rock bands are taking over the world. Just this month, a rock band comprising hijab wearing girls from Indonesia became a Youtube sensation, and performed on Indonesia's biggest stage. Girl power indeed!
