Lucknow jail rape case: The jail doctor has been arrested for the alleged rape of a woman constable at Krishna Nagar in Lucknow district on Tuesday night, September 28.
A case was registered against the doctor on September 23, although the incident took place on September 7. According to the police, the accused has been identified as Ashish Kumar Singhiya, who is a resident of the area which falls under the SGPGI police. He is a government doctor at Lucknow Jail, who also runs a clinic in Baldi Khera locality, which is 11 kilometres away from Lucknow Jail.
The survivor had visited the doctor’s clinic on September 7. The media reports alleged that she was forcefully given some sedatives by the accused.
On the complaint of the survivor, the police registered a case and arrested the accused. The (Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) for Central Zone, Rajesh Srivastav, said that the accused has been charged with the Indian Penal Code related to rape, causing hurt by means of poison and criminal intimidation.
On September 22, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath at an event spoke on the violence against women and the punishment for the perpetrators. According to media reports, Adityanath said, “If someone plays with dignity of women, he will meet the same fate as that of Duryodhana and Dushasana in Mahabharta.”
In June this year, a member of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission had appealed to the parents of young girls to not give mobile phones to them as they talk to men and then run away. This was in response to increasing rape cases in Uttar Pradesh.
In 2019, according to the National Crime Records Bureau, Uttar Pradesh accounted for 59,853 registered crimes against women, which is 14 percent of the national total.
