Kerala: Police Arrests 18 People Over Sexual Abuse Of A Minor Girl, 29 Cases Registered

A minor girl from Kerala was allegedly sexually assaulted for several years by over 38 men. The police have arrested 18 people so far in connection with the incident, after registering 29 cases as per the minor's statements.

The girl was staying with her brother but went missing last month. A few days later, the police took the girl under custody and when she was counselled by the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) the girl opened up about the sexual abuse she had been through.

According to The Indian Express, the girl was first abused in 2016 and was kept at a shelter home run by the Chief Welfare Committee. But after a second POCSO case in 2017, the CWC lodged the girl to a government shelter where her brother sought her custody.  “As her family members were not involved in the case, the CWC allowed her custody to her brother in October 2019,” said a police source.

Kerala police have arrested 18 men under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, pertaining to the sexual abuse of a minor girl in the Malappuram district. During the CWC counselling, the girl revealed that she had been abused multiple times. Following her revelation, the police registered 29 cases and arrested 18 accused men. However, an investigation is still underway to ascertain the actual number of accused in the incident.

In another incident reported from the Madhubani district of Bihar, a hearing and speech impaired teen was allegedly gangraped by a group of men. The young girl was grazing cattle in a field when some men reportedly dragged her to an isolated spot and sexually assaulted her. As per reports, the perpetrators further tried to damage the teen’s eye with a sharp object fearing she would identify them. The minor was immediately rushed to a hospital where the doctor's treating her informed that one of her eyes was completely damaged while another one was injured. Read about it more here.
