Kerala Dowry Cases In The Spotlight: Vismaya Death Sends Shockwaves

Nair was a final year Bachelors student of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery student. A few days before her death, she had sent photos of injuries on her body to a cousin, alleging domestic violence. On the morning of June 21, she was found dead at Kiran’s home in Sooranad.

Her family revealed shocking details of marital abuse she faced since marrying Kiran in 2020, over dowry harassment. Kiran was reportedly unhappy with the car he had received as dowry and demanded cash in exchange for it. More details here.

“She would call me from the bathroom, and once she told me that he hit her so badly in the face that her mouth was bleeding. I told her to come back, but she said what people say, she will somehow endure it,” Nair’s mother was quoted saying. She further claimed Kiran had prevented her daughter from contacting any of her family.

An officer with the state transport department, Kiran has reportedly been suspended from service following his involvement in the case. Police say he has admitted to physically assaulting his late wife.
