An Army colonel posted at the Central Ordnance Depot (COD) in Kanpur was booked on Sunday for allegedly raping a friend's Russian wife at an officer's mess, police said. The survivor's husband, who is a civilian, lodged an FIR against his Army officer friend at the Cantonment police station. According to the complaint, the colonel first intoxicated him and then raped his wife. The incident took place on December 10.
In the complaint, the husband said that he and his wife were invited by the colonel to a party on the occasion of his promotion. He was earlier serving as a lieutenant and then posted as a colonel on Saturday, Superintendent of Police (East) Raj Kumar Agarwal, India Today reported. According to the woman's husband, his friend identified as Neeraj Gehlot, "offered him a drink laced with sedatives."
"Soon after consuming it, he became unconscious. The Colonel then dragged his friend's wife to another room," her husband told Tribune India. Adding that the accused also allegedly assaulted the woman and "and tried to force himself on her."
"The Colonel then raped the victim. The Russian woman has been living in India for the past 10 years now,” police said.
"Police have launched a probe and efforts are being made to nab the colonel. His friend has stated in the FIR that the colonel had invited his wife and him to a party on the occasion of his promotion to the rank of colonel from that of lieutenant colonel on Saturday," police added.
The police officer said, "We have sent the woman for a medical examination and the report is awaited."
A case has been registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) of 376 (rape). "The Colonel is currently on the run," but police have been given orders to arrest the accused.
