A week after a 17-year-old boy committed suicide in Gurugram, purportedly after a girl accused him of sexual assault on social media, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has started probing the case. A four-membered team has been formed under the leadership of Assistant Commissioner of Police, DLF, The Indian Express reported. The unfortunate incident took place in Sector 53 area of Gurugram. The SIT includes the Station House Officer of the Sector 53 police station and two personnel from the Cyber police station.

Key Takeaways:

  •  A 17-year-old boy was accused of sexual assault by a girl, on social media. As per reports, soon after the post went viral, the boy committed suicide.
  • No suicide note was found but messages retrieved from the boy’s phone showed that fellow students warned him that the police would question him.
  • A week after this, a special investigation team has been deployed to probe into the matter, including the Station House Officer of the Sector 53 police station and two personnel from the Cyber Police Station.

No FIR Lodged Yet

The case is being probed by a Special Investigation Team, including the Station House Officer of the Sector 53 police station and two personnel from Cyber Police Station. However, no FIR has been lodged yet. “We have only received the order regarding the SIT today. We have also met the family of the boy today and are conducting further investigations in the matter. No FIR has been registered yet,” ACP (DLF) Karan Goyal said, Indian Express reported.

National Commission For Child Rights Took Cognizance

The National Commission for Child Rights took cognizance of the matter and wrote to the DCP of the area asking him to investigate the allegations made by the girl. “Further, it is recommended that after rendering counseling to the aforesaid girl, her statement may be recorded. Similarly, the friends of the deceased boy may also be provided counselling by a professional counsellor, in order to remove the trauma and record their statements. Also, as per the allegations made by the complainant that the posts are still circulating, action to remove these alleged posts may also be simultaneously taken to avoid undesired coverage,” the letter states.

History Of The Case

The 17-year-old boy committed suicide purportedly after a girl accused him of sexual assault on social media. The incident took place in Sector 53 area of Gurugram, at around 11:30 PM at night on May 4. The boy jumped off from the 11th floor of the apartment where his family resides. His suicide is being linked to the accusation by the girl since this incident reportedly took place hours after the girl claimed that the boy “attacked her two years ago” and that she was “tired of keeping this a secret”, as per an HT report.   No suicide note was, however, found and the messages retrieved from the boy’s phone showed that fellow students warned him that the police would question him.

Since this case took place in parallel with the Bois Locker Room case, it was speculated that both of these cases might be somehow connected. However, no such link was found.
