Senior Journalist Gauri Lankesh Murdered at Her Residence

Gauri Lankesh, a senior journalist and activist in Bengaluru, was murdered at her residence in Rajarajeshwari Nagar in Bengaluru on the night of 5th September.

She had returned home and was unlocking her door when the incident took place. Police sources said three assailants were involved who shot her in the head and chest. She died on the spot. Her body has been taken to the Victoria Hospital for a post-mortem.

She was the editor of the weekly Gauri 'Lankesh Patrike,' a Kannada tabloid. Besides this, she was renowned for being an independent journalist.

The Police also mentioned that they found her body on the verandah of her house around 8 pm. As news of her murder spread, a crowd gathered around her place. People also started protesting over her murder at the Corporation Circle.

A large number of people gathered outside Gauri Lankesh's house as news of her murder spread. "Usually, she would drive back home late night. At around 8pm today, we heard gun shots and rushed out. For a few minutes, we could not understand what had happened. Then we realized that Gauri had been shot at and saw her lying in a pool of blood near the door," neighbours said, as reported by TOI.

A lot of people took to twitter to express their grief on her death.

Her father, P Lankesh, was a noted Kannada writer. In November, the court convicted her on charges of defamation of two BJP leaders for two articles published in her periodical in 2008. She was asked to pay Rs. 10,000 as penalty. However, she was later granted bail.

Gauri Lankesh is survived by her mother, her sister Kavitha Lankesh, a filmmaker and her brother Indrajit who also makes films and runs Lankesh Patrike.
