The incident took place on October 20 and the arrests were made the day after that on October 21. The deceased was found hanging from a tree at Piparsand village, which comes under Sarojini Nagar police station.

The daughter of the deceased, Khemai Gautam, then lodged a complaint with the Sarojini Nagar police against the four men, alleging that her father died by suicide because of the four men were trying to extort money from him, in exchange for the release of his son.

According to the deceased man's daughter, the four men allegedly framed her brother in a 'fake' rape case and kept demanding Rs. 10 lakh from the deceased for a possible settlement.

In her statement, the daughter also said that on Tuesday (October 19) the four men came to meet her father and allegedly offered a settlement. But Khemai could not afford to pay the kind of amount quoted by them.

The same night, she said that her father did not return home and the next day, the family found him hanging from the tree. The Station House officer of Sarojini Nagar, Mahendra Singh said that a case of the abetment to suicide has been registered against Gangaram, Santram, Veerpal and Saurabh.

Recently, the Delhi High Court said that false claims and allegations of molestation and rape need to be dealt with strictly, considering the seriousness of the issue.

"Such litigations are instituted by the unscrupulous litigants in the hope that the other party will capitulate to their demands out of fear or shame. Unless wrongdoers are not made to face the consequences of their actions, it would be difficult to prevent such frivolous litigations," said Justice Subramonium Prasad.

This judgement came while the bench was hearing a petition seeking quashing of a first-person report (FIR) registered under Section 376  (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. Both the parties had registered cross-cases of rape against each other.
