Delhi cigarette murder: A man in the national capital’s Dwarka area reportedly assaulted and brutally killed a woman, who ran a store, after she “refused to give him a cigarette.” The incident occurred Sunday night and police said the accused was arrested. Reports suggest some other locals, who were involved in an altercation at the scene, were arrested too.

Identified as 30-year-old Vibha, the late woman was married and had two children. She lived in Dabri and ran the general store with her husband, as per Indian ExpressCCTV footage caught the accused, Dilip, and Vibha in an argument. She was reportedly trying to chase him away with a stick but he attacked her with a weapon.

According to police, Dilip was inebriated and had a toolbox in his bag, which carried a sharp object. Dilip used it to slash Vibha’s throat. She was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

“Dilip is a plumber and a contractor. He was drunk at the time and had a heated argument with Vibha,” police were quoted saying. He had asked Vibha for some food and a cigarette, which she refused him, leading to her death. Officials told Hindustan Times that at the time of the murder, “10-12 pedestrians” passed them by.

A mob of tens of local people reportedly reached the spot after Vibha fell to the ground and thrashed Dilip. They pelted stones at him and, as per reports, also at the police vehicle that came after being alerted of the crime. Locals were allegedly insisting that Dilip be handed over to them so they could beat him to death.

Five locals were arrested and several were charged for rioting. As per police, a couple of officers sustained injuries in the scuffle.
